In the city of Delft is a huge transformation going on. The train track, which currently runs trough the centre, is going to be underground. When this is completed there will be an entire area empty, waiting for real estate developments to fill the plots.
The entire project started in 1992 with the first research to the possibilities for the train track and will last until 2035, when the real estate developments will be finished. In 2015 the first tunnel part and new station will open and than there can be started with the real estate developments. During this period a lot of plots will be empty while waiting for their developments to start. In this period of 20 years there lies a chance for temporary project to create some liveliness and activity in the area. A call for ideas gave 20 ideas, but most of these ideas miss something. This might be a clear program or flexibility. And all the ideas came from people from the field of construction or design. I tried to aim for the end user and tried to catch their ideas by the use of a questionnaire. The aim was to collect ideas and opinions on possible temporary program for the Spoorzone. The people from Delft asked mainly for arts & culture and catering. But also, from a neighbourhood with families, the need for a petting zoo and green popped up.
To incorporate those ideas in a plan, which is able to work trough time, I adjusted the period of time and the design to the form of temporariness which matched the location best. So each location has his own program and his own form of temporariness.
There are three locations that are best for temporary projects. The first one is next to the old and new station. This location bridges the gap between the old station and the new station for shops. When the new station is put to use the station hall is not entirely ready, so the shops need to get another place. From this fact the shops are located next to the new station and will be in use for around a year.
The second location is in the middle of the developments. This location is a location that needs to be really flexible. Not only in program, but also in adjusting trough time. The future design needed to be easy to be (re) moved. The program is adjusted to this flexibility. It will consist out of a cafe, which is the function that attracts people everyday. The other functions will be a theatre and the possibility to expose art and information.
The third design is the design of the petting zoo. This will be located in an area, which will become a green area in the future plan of Palmbout. The petting zoo will stay as long as possible and add value to the area during the developments and maybe even after the developments are gone.
The core of these designs is the structure. All three designs consist out of a column and beam structure, which makes them a family. But by adjusting them to the situations they have their own identity.
The design near the station is a steel column and beam structure with containers. The containers will house the Albert Heijn, Kiosk and Ticketservice. After a year the containers will leave and the structure can stay. In the structure are green planters integrated that form a green roof.
The theatre design is the most flexible design. The steel columns and beams are attached to each other by bolds, which makes it easy to (re)construct the structure. By adding extra holes in the columns and beams the floors, railings, walls and even swings or roofs are easy to attach. By this a catalogue of different elements makes it possible to change the location every time, but also the setting each time. The stage is representing the old station platform. Not only in materialisation, but also in positioning on the exact location of the old platform.
The petting zoo is the only wooden structure. To represent the more traditional idea of a petting zoo, but in a more modern way. The stables are situated on the ground floor and the office and kitchen are situated upstairs.
